Our Team

Ken Martin (Director)
Ken has worked for most of his career on the interface between the private and public sectors, and has extensive experience of successful partnership building between the two. His experience of managing such partnerships and marketing ideas and services to domestic and international audiences is reflected in SBD Associates' wide range of clients.

Like many Cornishmen, Ken left Cornwall to pursue his education and career. After reading Economics and Politics at the University of Liverpool, he worked for the Bank of England in London. From there he moved into regional policy and inward investment, working with multinational companies across all sectors.

He lived and worked for nearly ten years in the USA, establishing and running the first English Regional Development Organisation office in the United States, followed by one for Devon & Cornwall. He also has extensive experience of visiting and doing business in Europe and the Far East.

In 1992 he became Chief Executive of Devon and Cornwall Development International - an organisation which he ran for the next 8 years, building up a reputation as one of the UK's most effective regional promotion bodies. In 1995 he also established the first Regional Supply Office in England and served as its Chief Executive. In 1999 he left to start SBD Associates.

Ken is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.  He serves on many local regeneration committees, is a governor at Saltash Community School and is Chair of Cornwall College Saltash.

Mairead Munro (Associate)
Mairead joined SBD in November 2007 after two years with the Youth Hostel Association based in the Wye Valley.  She graduated from the University of Wales, Bangor with a 2.1 in French and Criminology and Criminal Justice after spending a year teaching English as a foreign language in Corsica.  She has completed an MSc (Dist) in Social Research and Evaluation at Plymouth University.

Mairead provides ad hoc support for SBD and its projects including the Cornwall Manufacturing Group and works closely with Christina Dixon Consulting.  Her strengths include data collection and analysis, surveys, interviews, desk based research, report writing and collating information.

How we work
Our clients' needs vary, and our working practices reflect this. Some projects are short-term or one-offs (such as feasibility research or marketing advice) some are long-term or ongoing (such as annual marketing contracts) and some are a mixture of the two - special projects within a retainer framework.

Our fees similarly vary according to the nature of the contract. The initial consultation with a client is free, following which we would normally prepare a proposal, including fee structure, for the client's consideration. Depending on the project and the client's requirements, fees may be based on hourly/daily rates, on a monthly retainer, or fixed project fee. Normal operating expenses (including travel) are included within the fee, and no extraordinary expenses are charged without prior authorisation by the client. SBD Associates carries standard Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance.
